Sometimes it’s tough to talk about feeling depressed or anxious in the summer. Commercials on tv and posts on social media tell us, both overtly and covertly, that summer is the best and happiest time of the year. But what if, for you, it’s not?
Our bodies remember trauma and distress, and often remind us near the time of the anniversary of our grief or loss. Maybe a loved one had a summer wedding, which ended in a painful divorce. Perhaps a loved one passed while serving, so Memorial Day and summer are hard times. A car accident, or some other trauma, may color our summer blue instead of sunny. Bipolar or cyclothymia don’t stop cycling because of the season, either. Anxiety also does not take time off at the summer solstice.
If you’re struggling right now, reach out to a licensed therapist who can help you to navigate to more peaceful times. You’ll be glad you did!
